EDU-E 504: Literacy Strategies for Elementary Teachers

Estimated Hours Per Week: 15

Overview

As teachers, it is our job to know and apply a vast body of educational research to meet the individual needs of our students. In this course, educational theories such as Zemelman, Daniels, and Hyde's "thirteen interlocking principles" and Pearson and Gallagher's "Gradual Release of Responsibility Model" will support your understanding of the learning process, while specific content-area theory will support your understanding of best practice in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. The primary goal of this course is to build a cohesive bridge from educational theory to teaching strategies that can be easily applied in a variety of classroom settings.

The purpose of the course is to assist the educator with the leap from theory to practice, or to enhance present knowledge in reference to this process. Content of the course includes teaching models, teaching strategies and approaches, and the application of personal and cognitive developmental theories. Also, the course allows students to implement curriculum they design by integrating assessment and feedback with the intent of enhancing all students learning.

NOTE: This course is available in 8-week and 16-week formats. In the 8-week format, students complete one module per week. In the 16-week format, students complete one module every two weeks. The 16-week format is for Induction students only.
